It watches… It waits…
Years ago, I did a big map for a world O wanted to develop for my own roleplaying game. My motivation floundered and it got relegated to the pile of ‘stuff I might look at again one day’. I really like the map (which was black and white and hand drawn), so I’ve decided to start working on it again digitally (the map that is, not the rpg) 😉
Here’s current progress;
The various ‘continents’ were race-specific;
Havenland – Human
Myrklund – Orcs and Goblins
Narrasil – Elves
Nor-Kharad – Dwarves
Tessel – Halflings
Neath – Tainted Humans
Hsst-Agor – Snakes/Lizards
Avenholme – Avians
This was possibly the most atmospheric RPG session I had (years and years ago), where I GM’d Gary Gygax’s Dangerous Journeys RPG. I had my party head-hunted by the priest of a large town to deliver a small package to a friend of his in an outlying border, where his friend ran an Inn.
They arrived at nightfall, and the Inn was silent and dark. I ran it like a macabre horror.
The package was a holy symbol, the innkeeper had requested it because he thought his Inn had become possessed… in reality a demon lived in the bottom of the well, and came out at night… it was classic.
What have been your best and most favoured character names (any genre)? I’m talking about ones you have created (rather than hijacked from films/novels lol);
- Kallis, Jyenna and Kyessa DeBastion (the DeBastion Sisters) – female human cleric, fighter and fighter/thief.
- Kildrellan – male human armoured fighter
- Adliandantus – male elf wizard
I’ll add more, when I am not rushing to leave the house lol 🙂
Monkey God stayed here once, just prior to ‘The Cleansing of Kallis Keep’… when he left the following morning, all the horses and cattle had gone from the surrounding lands – maybe he was hungry that night…

The castle wall file has been updated to include some extra goodies;
- high wall elements
- 90, 60, 45 and 30 degree internal and external wall corners

I first played D&D when I was about 12, and I have to say that it fuelled my imagination for years. Me and a group of friends played this and many other RPG’s (Palladium, TMNT, Judge Dredd, Warhammer Fantasy, etc, etc) until we had no spare time left.
Initially I loved the fact that I could, to some degree, experience a sense of adventure in such a way that I never could have in real life. This continued into my late teens, and then I began to work for a living.
Sometime after this point, my view changed, and I found myself involved in gaming to enjoy spending time with friends, and also to escape the stresses of modern working. My friends were also working, and they in turn were having families, getting stressful jobs, etc. Time for games just wasn’t as available, and as the time to make sessions faded, so did the enthusiasm.
Having a lot of work pressures took away the spare bits of brain left available for the task of playing, which did involve brain-space even if just a player. As a GM, the time taken to administer these sessions becomes too much of a task.
I wish that I could re-immerse myself into these halcyon days… the days when surviving a dragon fight on 1hp to scramble through its hoard were things of legend, and getting just enough XP to level up made you feel all warm and fluffy…
…Instead of “Bob called, and their courier has let them down, so that means you are likely to have a load of crap for the next three days explaining to the client, why they can’t have their xyz”.
My questions are thus;
- Is D&D suffering with older audiences due to the stresses of modern working life?
- Is there a ‘goldilocks zone’ for player ages, by virtue of ‘mental brain space’
God, I sound like Carrie Bradshaw… God, I even remember her name…
The Monkey God’s mood is good today, and he has instructed me to make available all the bits of buildings and things I have created for SketchUp over the last few years so that others may use them to create their own fantasy maps in 3D…
Some of the buildings appear in my Winterhaven and Loudwater maps, as well as a number of others. The beauty of this ‘collection’ is that each is made into a ‘component’ so that they can easily be moved as a whole and rotated simply by using the move tool.
I also made the wall section such that it would join with other wall sections, and also a pair of left and right hand internal and external corners.
